Every text is different. It matters quite a lot if your target audience consists of academics or the general public. The demands are different; the expectations are different.
As a writer, I always take my audience into account. I am the author of several publications. I write for both an academic audience, as for the average lay person; for both visitors of musea and academic institutions; both in English and in Dutch.
